JOBS TO BE DONE (JTBD)

Jobs to be done was originally focussed on product development, but we use it for everything from how to structure your communications to defining strategies and systems.  It is based on a simple core idea:  What is the job to be done by this product, service, task, or action?

We could talk about JTBD for hours, but let us leave you with what we think are the four core key questions it asks:

  1. What is the key pain points you are trying to remove? (Push)
  2. What benefits are you hoping to achieve? (Pull)
  3. What concerns do you have about the solution? (Anxiety)
  4. What is preventing you from changing? (Habit)

Building those questions into any ideation or change program could be key to unlocking the hidden value or even achieving success.

Popcorn flow is an agile methodology to help you identify and run experiments within your organisation.  Popcorn stands for Problems & Observations, Options, Possible experiments, Committed, Ongoing, Review, Next.

Popcorn flow is a passion of Irish consultant, Claudio Perrone, who is currently building a platform based on this methodology.  We are eagerly awaiting its delivery!

TOOLS

There are no shortage of tools out there and everyone has their pet ones that just seem to solve their particular problem space perfectly.   Here are some of the tools we like and use:

TRELLO

Now owned by Atlassian, Trello is pretty well known tool for collaborating around tasks and ideas.  It is extremely lightweight and simple to use with plenty of examples on how to set up a Trello board for your organisation problem or process

ATLASSIAN TOOLS

We are big fans of the Atlassian tool sets especially Confluence.  The atlassian toolsets now also include Trello to help capture your tasks and ideas through a workflow.  We’ve tried various plugins for both Jira and Confluence over the years but have since culled own to a few specific problem cases.  The core functionality will serve most organisations quite effectively.

OFFICE365 – PLANNER

If you’re already an office365 customer, then the Planner functionality is actually quite decent!  There is some functionality missing like the ability to create templates and pre-created workflows, but on the whole it does the job, and is gradually becoming more entrenched inside the the Offic365 ecosystem.
